Open Call for Applications: Advancing Human Rights in Kenya

(Modified )

The Haki Ni Yetu Consortium is excited to announce a new funding opportunity for Kenyan grassroots organisations working on human rights, good governance and accountability. Deadline for applications is Tuesday March 4 of 2025 at 23:59 local Kenyan time

The Haki Ni Yetu project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Finnish KIOS Foundation in partnership with InformAction and CSO Network, invites applications under the “Rights, Governance, and Accountability Grants” funding scheme.

“We’ve seen the power of local voices to drive lasting change. With this second round of Rights, Governance, and Accountability Grants, we aim to build on that momentum,” said Team Leader Saara Frestadius. “Empowering grassroots and community-based organizations advancing human rights is at the heart of the Haki Ni Yetu project. We’re proud to support the human rights movement in Kenya as it creates meaningful, lasting impact.”

The call is open to civil society organisations actively engaged in upholding human rights across Kenya. The focus is on community-based organisations (CBOs) and other small not-for-profit organisations operating outside Nairobi, or in the informal settlements of the capital.

Priority Thematic Areas

Applications should focus on one or more of the following themes:

  • Democracy and the Rule of Law: Promoting good governance, state accountability, combating corruption, enhancing the rule of law, and increasing access to justice.
  • Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination: Advancing women’s rights, preventing gender-based violence (GBV), and promoting inclusion, diversity and rights of marginalised groups.
  • Business and Human Rights: Promoting responsible business conduct, corporate accountability, addressing human rights violations linked to business activities, and tackling environmental and climate justice.

We encourage organisations led by women, youth, and marginalised communities to apply. At least 50% of the financial support will be allocated to these groups.

Grant details

  • Grant amount: € 15,000 to €30,000
  • Grant duration: Up to 12 months

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to human rights in Kenya and to be part of the change!

Note that the application process will be two-fold and in the first stage we are asking for an Expression of Interest instead of full proposals. Shortlisted applicants from the Expression of Interest stage will be requested to submit a full proposal through the same KIOS online application portal.
